kamera: gphoto2 KDE IO Slave & KControl Module

Location / Home / Projects / kamera / Introduction

kamera is an IO slave and a KControl panel module which allows you to access folders and images within any digital camera supported by the upcoming gPhoto2 libraries.

If you have a supported camera, you can start using it with most KDE applications in two easy steps: simply configure your camera model and port type from a list in KControl, then start accessing the camera contents with a kamera:/ URL.

Features

  • Seamless compatibility with Konqueror - Thanks to KDE2's advanced IO slave architecture, you can view the contents of your camera with a simple URL. You can even use Konqueror's icon view mode with image preview to see thumbnails of your images! If your camera supports gPhoto2's file preview ability, kamera can be configured to use these directly as Konqueror's thumbnails (ideal for slow bus cameras, like with a serial connection)

  • Drag and Drop - copy and move images from Konqueror, or drop them straight into any application which accepts dropped images. Combined with KDE2's existing FTP IO slave, putting freshly taken pictures onto your website becomes about as simple as it can get.

  • Send pictures to a friend - Select 'File -> Attach' in KMail, enter a camera image URL (e.g. "kamera:/image07.pnm") and you're done.

How to get kamera/gPhoto

Kamera was donated to the KDE project in early 2001. Because it was based on an early release version of the gPhoto libraries, that meant that changes and problems were bound to happen over time. Currently Ilya Konstantinov is maintaining the project, and while Kamera is not included in 2.2 or 2.2.1 of KDE because of issues with gPhoto and a few Kamera bugs, it will be in 2.2.2 (if that comes to be) and definitely 3.0. This means you will get it as part of your KDE distribution without any extra effort.
