tkcKapital

Location / Home / Embedded / tkcKapital / Quick start guide

1. What is it

Kapital is a personal finance manager like Microsoft Money or Quicken. Finances are organized in different accounts, and transactions can be assigned to categories. Kapital supports the native TKK file format, QIF files, and OFX files that many online bank vendors use to download transaction details. Kapital allows importing these files from one account to another. See section 3.6 for more information.

2. How it is organized

The pocket version of kapital has 6 different kind of pages:
- Account list
- Category list
- Calendar
- Finder
- Register
- Import

For the first four pages, there are quick access button in the toolbar, and there is only one page per kind. There can be at most one register page for each account. All pages are accessible through a tab control on the top of the page

3. How it works

Here is the explanation of each page.

3.1 The Account list page

In this page is present a hierarchical list of the accounts present in the current file. For each account the following information is shown:
- Account name
- Description
- Type
- Balance

At the bottom of the page there are the following action buttons (in order, from left to right):
- New
- Delete
- Edit
- Confirm edit
- Cancel edit
- Register

Hitting the new button or the edit button opens the detail dialog, where you can type the account informations, choose the account type and (eventually) the parent. You can then confirm the entered informations or reject the editing. Both the confirm and reject button close the detail dialog. The register button opens a register page for the current account. (the register page is discussed below) Tapping and holding the stylus on an account opens the register page for the selected account.

3.2 The Category list page

In this page is present a hierarchical list of the categories present in the current file. For each category the following information is shown:
- Account name
- Description
- Type

At the bottom of the page there are the following action buttons (in order, from left to right):
- New
- Delete
- Edit
- Confirm edit
- Cancel edit

This page works essentially like the account page

3.3 The Calendar page

In this page the days where a transaction has been entered are marked with a small icon.

At the bottom of the page there are the following action buttons (in order, from left to right):
- previous year
- previous month
- today
- next month
- next year
- transaction list (toggle)

Clicking on a day with transactions enables the transaction list button. wehn toggled on, this button opens a list of the transactions for the selected day. Tapping and holding the stylus on a transaction opens the related register page and selects the transaction.

3.4 The Finder

This pages comes in two flavours: Simple mode (the default) and expert mode. Modes can be toggled with the two action buttons on the bottom of the screen.

At the bottom of the page there are the following action buttons (in order, from left to right):
- Simple mode
- Expert mode
- Find
- Clear finder.

On the top of the page there is the parameter dialog (that is different between simple mode and expert mode). Below the parameter dialog there is the result list, that will contain the list of found items. In each mode, the Find button starts the search and the Clear finder button clears both the parameters and the result list. In the result list, tapping and holding the stylus on a transaction opens the related register page and selects the transaction.

3.4.1 The simple mode

In the simple mode, the user can enter the text to search and select the kind of search to be performed:
- All : full text search on the payee, date and amount
- Payee: only the payee is searched (partial matches allowed)
- Date: only the date is searched (exact match)
- Amount: only the amount is searched (exact match)

3.4.2 The expert mode

In the expert mode, the following criteria can be selected:
- Accounts: select the accounts to search (if none is selected, the search is performed on all accounts)

- Amount range (if not inserted, corresponds to -9999999999 - 9999999999)
- Payee: full text search on the payee field.

3.5 The register

3.6 The Import page

To access the import page go to an Account's register page and select the icon on the far right with the down arrow. Click and hold the icon until a popup menu pops up. The menu will attempt to show all Sessions and their applicable. Accounts so that you can quickly select an account to import. If you can not find the account you need, you can use the Find File option to open the File Selector manager to search for the session file.

The import page allows the user to import transactions from one account into another. This is useful for merging, importing transactions, or downloading transactions into the current account. The import page supports QIF, TKK, and OFX files. The screen is laid out with the information about the current transaction being imported displayed on the top. You can mark the account as a new transaction in which you can edit the transaction into the register, or you can mark it as an existing transaction and either save it or change the transaction details. At the bottom of the page are options to create a transaction, edit a transaction, and apply or cancel the transaction being imported. Also, you can select one of three modes to view the transactions being imported. You can select to either Show All transactions in which every transaction that was found in the file being imported is displayed, or you can select Show New Only in which only those transactions that did not seem to match an existing transactions are displayed, or you can select "Show Existing Only" in which only those transactions that matched a transaction in the existing register are displayed. To scroll through the list of imported transactions, use the Right and Left arrow buttons at the bottom. Transactions are saved into the current register when you hit the Apply button at the bottom.

3.6.1 Synchronizing with the Kapital desktop

Both Kapital and tkcKapital can import/merge from QIF, OFX or our internal TKK format. Currently there is no automatic method for synchronizes data between the two, but you can do it manually by copying the TKK file from the Zaurus to the desktop or from the desktop to the Zaurus and following the steps in the prior section. On the Zaurus the file will be located at /home/zaurus/Documents/application/x-qpe-kapital/[filename]

4. Getting started

The first time Kapital is started, it creates an empty session and opens the Accounts page. Here you can create a new account tapping the `new' icon in the lower left corner of the screen. You can enter the name of the account and eventually a description, the account type and the parent account if any. Then hit the 'confirm' icon to create the account. Create as many accounts as you need.

Using the Category page, create some categories to organize your transactions.

From the account page, select an account and open the register page by tapping and holding the stylus on it or using the register icon.

In the register page, hit the 'new' button to enter a new transaction. Insert the date, the payment or deposit using the popup calendar and calculators provided, type in a brief description in the Payee field and choose the category with the category dropdown, then hit the 'confirm' button to create the transaction.

To create a transfer between two accounts, simply choose the account to tranfer to from the category dropdown, a corresponding entry in that account register will be created automatically.
